Before the popular use of computers in illustration, stipple was created by placing literally millions of black ink dots, using a technical pen, in an exact order to produce an even and calculated texture. Reproduced easily, even on the inexpensive pulp of newspapers, stipple became a favorite style of illustration in the advertising market.
